Welcome to The Colony’s Critique Circle featuring local guest artists who are ready to kick off the feedback discussion. These sessions typically run 60 minutes and are designed to help artists get constructive thoughts from fresh perspectives.
You can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork that you’d like feedback on. You are welcome to attend even if you don’t have a work in progress that you’re ready for feedback on. Hearing what is said about others’ pieces is still a great way to learn and grow as an artist.
General guidelines for the critique circle:
- When it comes to your piece(s), you can open the floor for general feedback OR you can specify that you’re looking for feedback on a particular aspect only (example: I’m looking for feedback on the perspective of XYZ, or how to better achieve balance/harmony, etc.). People giving feedback should limit their constructive comments to only things asked about in the latter cases.
- You do not have to take everyone’s feedback to heart. People have different styles. Take what serves you. Leave what does not.
- When giving feedback, please follow the 2 rules that we’re adopting from another group: 1) If you’re giving positive feedback, please be specific and state what you like. 2) If you’re giving constructive feedback, please start your comment with “What if…?” so as to provide feedback in the spirit of a brainstorming session where feedback takes the form of just ideas being put on the table.
